What's New?
That everyone who thirsteth for the truth may obtain it, these publications are, as a Christian service, provided without charge. They levy but one exaction: the soul's obligation to itself to prove all things and hold fast to that which is good. The only strings attached to this free proffer are the golden strands of Eden and the crimson cords of Calvary - the ties that bind.

The Lord's Supper Daily Part 3

"It was the "WORD" which wrought in creation in the beginning and it is the "WORD" that is to FINISH the work of the earth. The "Word" is nothing more or less than the "TRINITY" speaking to us. God's commission to man JOINS him to the "TRINITY" and shows that God wants us to be co-laborers with Him. Man the mouth piece, the BIBLE the "WORD."..Here we can see that God gave man a very GREAT PART in the work of creation, and He has given us His "SPIRIT" to aid us in doing it. "All God required of His laborers was that they speak the "WORD"...Bible, which speaks of the Trinity. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the "NAME" of the "FATHER," and of the "SON," and of the "HOLY GHOST" teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even to the end of the world." Matt. 28: 19, 20. Yes, all God requires of us is to speak the "WORD," and He has pledged Himself to be with us to aid us." SC 11: 6: pp. 12, 13,14.

The first "THREE" days of creation represent "THE TRINITY," the "MYSTERY of God" – "Eternal Time" (Eternity – Sea – Unfallen Worlds – Eze 47). The last FOUR are but a REFLECTION of "The Three," The Father, The Holy Spirit, The Son.

The Sun, Moon, and stars created on the FOURTH day only reflect the light from the "Eternal Throne" of "The Trinity" and have to do with FOUR divisions of "Prophetic Time," the four corners of the earth.

"And He appointed the "lights" in the firmament...for SIGNS and for SEASONS, and for DAYS, and YEARS" (Gen. 1: 14), by the movements of which He fixed each SOLAR (Sun) and LUNAR (moon) date, so that it could never be lost sight of." A. B. p. 10.

"While leading the Hebrew host from BONDAGE to FREEDOM, the Lord was FIRMLY establishing them in the TRUTH of ALL things, including the TRUTH of the DAY on which the YEAR begins, and of the DAY on which the WEEK begins. "Thus the All-knowing One, He who created the heavenly bodies and knows the very MOMENT He set them in MOTION to govern (1) the DAY (2) the MONTH, and (3) the YEAR, DECREED that the Holy feasts be observed in the VERY MONTH and on the VERY DAY on which they were FIRST ordained. "Thus we see that His great and never-erring TIME-piece FOR EARTH, the earth's own INVARIABLE MOVEMENTS, fix the DAY and the YEAR; whereas the moon's revolving round the earth makes the MONTHS." Ans. Book 3 p. 9-10.

1. THE DAY – the SUN determines the LIGHT part of the DAY, beginning at SUNRISE – ruled by the sun; therefore, in whatever time zone one finds himself, a SUNRISE SCHEDULE is available to count when the THIRD and NINTH hours should begin, and which, varies a few minutes each day, except at the equator where the day and nights are equal. Then, all may know the "TIME" of the "Daily." Note: The third hour is counted from sunrise; therefore, it would begin when the second hour ends. For example: If sunrise is at 6 o'clock, then the third hour of the day would be from eight to nine. (Click here to determine the times of the Daily in your area).

The counting of the DARK part of the day is also determined by the SUN; that is, sunSET which also varies from day to day. In this respect, SUNRISE and SUNSET also determine the TIME of the weekly, "seventh day Sabbath" – "from even to even (from sunset to sunset) shall ye celebrate your Sabbaths." Lev. 23: 32. (all the Sabbath Feast days). The DAY, ONE day, has TWO parts (1) EVENING and (2) morning DARK and light parts. Likewise, the DAY, the LIGHT part, is divided in TWO parts: (1) MORNING and evening in respect to the "daily" sacrifice which was taken from the Apostolic church by the "man of sin." Dan. 8: 11 - 14. In the Sanctuary Service the MORNING and EVENING sacrifice took place at the THIRD and NINTH hours of the DAY. (light part). In the antitype, Christ fulfilled BOTH the MORNING and EVENING sacrifice: "nailed to the cross at the THIRD hour" Mark (15: 24, 25). "And at the NINTH hour Jesus cried with a LOUD VOICE (cry)..."Mark 15:34-38. All the types and symbols of the Sanctuary Service are a COMPACTED PROPHECY of the Gospel" (A.A. 14) which were acted out by their Author, Jesus of Nazareth. Thus we see the HOURS (two) THIRD and NINTH in prophecy; the DAY; the MONTH; the YEAR; all PROPHETIC of messages about Christ's work In the Sanctuary above (Heb. 8) to redeem His lost creation – SEVEN in all.

"Jesus not only fulfilled the law of the two lambs, offered for a "continual burnt offering," daily, ...but offers His blood "Daily" morning and evening (now), in our behalf in the courts above. ("And it was the third hour, and they crucified him." Mark 15: 25, and that same day, "at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice... My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Mark 15: 3, 8). The Holy Spirit (Melchisedec), acting in the capacity of High Priest, mediated the blood of the Son, the Sacrifice, in the heavenly sanctuary. Consequently, we see not only the Son involved in the sacrifice of His life to redeem man, but also, all heaven and the "Triune" Godhead, the whole Heavenly Family were involved. Daily 2:7 B.L.R. The presence of God's glory will be witnessed at the door of the congregation at the time of the morning and evening hours of the "Daily" sacrifice. These meetings (the morning and evening) are continual; not to offer the lambs as in the type (Ex. 29: 39,41), but to offer the oblation (the bread and the wine, Ex. 29:40) that Jesus reinstituted on the night of the Passover with His apostles (Luke 22: 15,19,20). Daily 2:3: B.L.R.

1. Morning and evening – "AT AN HOUR," Third and Ninth, Feast of the Lord's Supper;

2. The Seventh Day Sabbath – "AT A DAY," AT-ONE-MENT, the final rest from sin;

3. The New Moon – "AT A MONTH," symbol of RE-creation – "the Latter Rain;"

4. Passover – "AT A YEAR," the YEAR of my "Redeemed;"

5. Wave-sheaf – "AT A YEAR," FIRST of the First-fruits (Barley);

6. Pentecost, First-fruits – "AT A YEAR," Wave Loaves – wheat;

(7) Feast of Tabernacles – "AT A YEAR," All the fruits of the Harvest represented.

ACTS 2: 14 - 15. "But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:" "For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the THIRD HOUR of the day." Read Verses 22-36. ACTS 2:37-47.

"Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, WHAT SHALL WE DO?" "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and YE SHALL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST. "For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. "And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation." THEN they that gladly received his word WERE BAPTIZED: and the SAME DAY (Day of Pentecost) there were added unto them about THREE THOUSAND SOULS." "And they CONTINUED steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and FELLOWSHIP, and in breaking of bread (celebrating the Lord's Supper) and in prayers. THE LIVING BIBLE: Acts 2:42-43. "They joined with the other believers in regular attendance at the apostles teaching sessions and at the COMMUNION SERVICES and prayer meetings. "

"A deep sense of awe was on them all, and the apostles did many miracles." "And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common, and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they continuing DAILY with one accord IN THE TEMPLE, AND BREAKING BREAD FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE (day by day), did eat their meat with gladness AND SINGLENESS OF HEART. Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church "daily (day by day)" such as should be saved."...That is, they celebrated the Lord's supper "DAILY" the time of the morning and evening sacrifice from house to house, and observed the THIRD and NINTH hours of the Temple worship with the Jewish nation. (The Lord's Supper, a memorial of the Passover).

"By the Power of the Spirit, therefore, we behold the first Christians not only in a state of active fellowship; BUT ALSO internally changed: the narrow views of the natural man are broken through, they have their possessions in common, and they regarded themselves as ONE family. (The REWARD of their belief in a CRUCIFIED and RESURRECTED Messiah)." A commentary on Acts.

The crucifixion of the Messiah fulfilled the TYPICAL morning and evening sacrifice and TRANSFERRED the "Daily ministration" to the heavenly Sanctuary on the DAY of Pentecost. "But AFTER Christ's ascension His ENTHRONEMENT in His MEDIATORIAL kingdom was SIGNALIZED by the outpouring of the HOLY SPIRIT. ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST THE SPIRIT WAS GIVEN. Christ's witnesses proclaimed the power of a risen saviour. The light of heaven penetrated the darkened minds of those who had been deceived by the enemies of Christ. They now saw Him exalted to be a "Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins." They saw Him ENCIRCLED WITH THE GLORY OF HEAVEN, with infinite treasures in His hands to bestow upon all who would turn from their rebellion. As the apostles SET FORTH THE GLORY of the Only Begotten of the Father, THREE THOUSAND SOULS WERE CONVICTED. They were made to see themselves as they were, sinful and polluted, and Christ as their friend and Redeemer. CHRIST WAS LIFTED UP, CHRIST WAS GLORIFIED, THROUGH THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT RESTING UPON MEN.

"By faith these believers saw Him as the one who had borne humiliation, suffering, and death that they might not perish but have everlasting life. The REVELATION OF CHRIST BY THE SPIRIT brought to them a realizing sense of His power and majesty, and they stretched forth their hands to Him by faith, saying, "I believe." Christ's Object Lessons P. 120. "Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: "Therefore let us keep the FEAST, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." 1 Cor. 5:7- 8. "THE LORD'S SUPPER, INSTITUTED BY CHRIST, or more broadly the Christian's life of faith, is also A FEAST." A Dictionary of the Bible p. 230. 1 Cor. 5:7-8. "Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you." 1 Cor. 11: 2. "For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, "Take eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me." After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, "This is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

"Wherefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, NOT DISCERNING THE LORD'S BODY – (that two separate streams, one of blood, one of WATER, came forth from his side as the sword pierced his body). For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For IF WE WOULD JUDGE OURSELVES, we should NOT BE JUDGED. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world." 1 Cor. 11: 23-32.

"The Lord's bread and cup are to be taken by a people ONLY after they have examined THEMSELVES, and have seen to it that THEY are not causing trouble; and if we would avoid causing divisions among ourselves, we should NEVER discuss the sins of others, NOR PASS JUDGMENT ON THEM. We cannot lead the Lord. He is to lead us. We of ourselves never know what is right and what is wrong unless we are told (by Inspiration.) Easy enough, if we do whatever we are told to do, no more and no less, we shall be accounted worthy." 1 T.G. 3:4, 5.

ISAIAH 55. "HO, EVERY ONE THAT THIRSTETH, COME YE TO THE WATERS, AND HE THAT HATH NO MONEY; COME YE, BUY, AND EAT; YEA, COME, BUY WINE AND MILK WITHOUT MONEY AND WITHOUT PRICE. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? And your labor for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness." Verses 1, 2. The word "Ho" signifies "whosoever," or "anyone that will hear." It was not so in the Old Testament time, for the Jews then thought the Bible was for the descendants of Abraham only.

"WATER is composed of TWO ELEMENTS, namely OXYGEN and HYDROGEN. WITHOUT HYDROGEN LIFE CANNOT EXIST, and without OXYGEN, LIFE WOULD CEASE IN LESS THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES. Water is never sold; it is free... Neither is it for sale in the Scriptures, but is offered free. No price can be set for LIFE ETERNAL. If it was sold, no one could buy it, THEREFORE THE SYMBOL USED HERE IS PERFECT. IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO SUBSTITUTE ANY OTHER EARTHLY ARTICLE TO REPRESENT SPIRITUAL LIFE. (water – composed of TWO life-giving ELEMENTS)

"Yea, come, buy WINE and MILK without money and without price." Though the WATER IS FREE, the WINE and the MILK are SOLD but there IS NO SET price on it, NOR IS THE EXCHANGE MADE WITH MONEY. Something must be given in trade to make the transaction. What must it be? The answer is found in the seventh verse, as follows: "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: And let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon." We must forsake our ways and our thoughts, and in exchange, TAKE GOD'S THOUGHTS AND FOLLOW HIS WAYS. Verse 8: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord." Not until after this transaction is made can one PLEASE, SERVE, OR UNDERSTAND GOD, NOR CAN HE ENTER HEAVEN. When this transaction is made, the thoughts, ways, desires, actions, and the whole human being is changed. How do we get God's THOUGHTS ...and WAYS are found in His WORD (the Bible). THE MAN WHO WILL FOLLOW THE COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD is in a HEAVENLY ATMOSPHERE, and walks with God as Enoch of old.

"The next SYMBOL mentioned is the MILK, and it, too, must be perfect in itself in order to point out the TRUTH INTENDED BY the SPIRIT OF GOD. The human body is made up of SIXTEEN DIFFERENT ELEMENTS. If we should exhaust our supply of ONE of these ELEMENTS, and life did not cease immediately (depending on the element lacking), there WOULD BE TROUBLE SOMEWHERE WITHIN THE HUMAN SYSTEM. "IF" MILK CONTAINED "ALL" THE ELEMENTS required to keep the human body, the MEANING of the SYMBOL would indicate that the first TWO SYMBOLS, or DOCTRINES are of "NO" GREAT IMPORTANCE. Since MILK "DOES NOT" contain "ALL" THE NECESSARY ELEMENTS, it signifies that the DOCTRINE represented by the MILK "ONLY," is "NOT" SUFFICIENT. (The element of IRON is ABSENT from milk. That which is "not" found in the MILK (iron) is supplied by the WINE.

"THEREFORE the "THREE DOCTRINES" taught here "CANNOT" be "SEPARATED." ONE FROM THE OTHER" One without the other is insufficient to preserve physical life; likewise the spiritual. "What is the "doctrine" taught by the MILK? This SYMBOL is simple to understand. The MILK represents the "WORD OF GOD (bread of life)" as found in THE BIBLE. 1 Peter 2: 2. "As new born babes, desire the sincere MILK of the WORD, that ye may GROW thereby." GOD'S WORD IS PERFECT, AND IT WILL SUPPLY ALL THE "DOCTRINES" (ELEMENTS) needed for the human HEART TO MAKE US PERFECT BUT without the SHEDDING OF THE BLOOD OF CHRIST, it WOULD NOT PROFIT US AT ALL. Neither would the WORD and the BLOOD help us much if there was NO LIFE (WATER) IN THE SON OF GOD. Only by using the three together can complete nourishment, eternal life be obtained.

"Thus, the WATER, WINE, and MILK are COMBINED, and CAN "NOT" BE "separated" ONE FROM ANOTHER and "still" maintain LIFE ETERNAL as represented by the oxygen (air) in the water. PERFECT SYMBOLS are they not?

"It is impossible for human wisdom to improve on God's work. Just so, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO NEGLECT ONE of GOD'S WORDS and YET MAINTAIN SPIRITUAL LIFE. GOD'S WORD must be KEPT in the human heart, PURE and UNADULTERATED, if we must live by it. "This robe, woven in the loom of heaven HAS IN IT NOT ONE THREAD OF HUMAN DEVISING." Christ's Object Lessons, page 311. WHY SPEND MONEY FOR THAT WHICH IS NOT BREAD?

"WHEN WE SPEND OUR MONEY FOR FOOD WHICH DOES NOT CONTAIN ALL THE REQUIRED ELEMENTS, OR IF IT IS OF AN UNBALANCED PROPORTION, THEN IT IS NOT AS THE CREATOR MADE IT. In such foods, the elements required to sustain physical health are not found. It would be only a waste of money in buying such foods. The worst harm done by the use of these baser products is not to one's pocketbook only, but to his health in reducing his physical powers. THE UPKEEP OF THE HUMAN BODY DEPENDS ON THE FOOD SUPPLY WE GIVE IT." 1 S.R: 140-144.

Likewise, the upkeep of our spiritual body depends on the food supply we give it, the wine (iron), the water (oxygen) and the milk (the WORD – BREAD) for perfect spiritual nutrition – THREE ELEMENTS COMBINED TOGETHER which CANNOT be SEPARATED, to give complete physical and spiritual health and nourishment.

"CHRIST, THE GREATEST TEACHER, LOVED NATURE. In teaching by parable, He linked divine truth with common things, and incidents found in the experiences of the Shepherd, the builder, the tiller of the soil, the scientist, the astronomer, traveller, the homemaker, the blacksmith, etc. These familiar objects were accounted with thoughts true and most beautiful as portrayed in all nature: The thoughts of a caring God and Their loving interest in us; of the honor due them, and of our loving care for one another. These familiar illustrations fixed the truth in the minds of all who listened to DIVINE WISDOM and the TRUTH was made clear and impressive.

"The relation of the (three) DOCTRINES INSEPARABLY COMBINED in the Communion service, the Water, Wine, and milk, teach the simple truth of how our spiritual body is nourished and preserved unto eternal life that we may truly discern in the Lord's natural body how we are saved from spiritual malnutrition and death "unto life Eternal" through the "Law of the Spirit of life" in Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit – the "Water" and the "Wine" COMBINED in the New Covenant by our TWO Intercessors Rom. 8: 26, 34. Christ, the wave-sheaf ordained the BREAD and WINE in the N. T. as MELCHISEDEC served the BREAD and WINE in the Old Testament.

"The juice of the grape is the subject of special praise in the Scriptures. The "vinetree" is distinguished from the other trees in the forest (Exe. 15.2). Wine is a good stimulant for "such as be faint in the wilderness" (II Sam. 16.2) and for those that be of heavy hearts (Prov. 31.6). The goodness of wine is reflected in the figure in which Israel is likened to a vine brought from Egypt and planted in the Holy Land, where it took deep root, spread out, and prospered (Ps.80. 9.11). The blessed wife is like "a fruitful vine by the sides of thy house" (Ps. 128.3). When peace reigns every man rests "under his vine and under his fig tree" (1 Kings v. 5). An abundance of wine indicates prosperity. Jacob blessed Judah that "he washed his garments in wine and his clothes in the blood of grapes" (Gen. xiix.11). BREAD as an INDISPENSABLE FOOD and WINE as a LUXURY REPRESENT TWO EXTREMES; they were used as signs of welcome and good-will to ABRAHAM (GEN. XIV.18). A LIBATION OF WINE was part of the CEREMONIAL SACRIFICES, varying in quantity from one-fourth of a hin measure (Num. xxviii. 14). In metaphorical usage, wine represents the essence of goodness. The Torah, Jerusalem, Israel, the Messiah, the righteous – ALL ARE COMPARED TO WINE. The wine which is kept for the righteous in the world to come has been preserved in the grape ever since the six days of creation (Ber. 34b). New wine stood for at least forty days before it was admissible as a drink-offering. Fresh wine before fermenting was called "yayin mi-gat (wine of the vat) Over all fruit the benediction used is that for the fruits of the "tree" but over wine a SPECIAL BENEDICTION for the "fruits of the vine" is pronounced (Ber. vii).

"THIS LATTER BENEDICTION IS ACCORDING TO R. ELIEZER, PRONOUNCED ONLY WHEN THE WINE HAS BEEN PROPERLY MIXED WITH WATER. The cup is filled with natural wine during grace, in memory of the Holy Land, where the best wine is produced; but after grace the WINE IS MIXED. The juice of the grape when expressed was used in various conditions: as must, fresh from the press; as wine, which was produced by VINOUS fermentation; "As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one Saith, Destroy it not, for a blessing is in it." VINOUS FERMENTATION WAS NOT REGARDED AS LEAVEN. During the passover it was FERMENTED DRINKS INTO WHICH GRAIN, and hence, the LEAVEN OF BREAD, had entered THAT THE JEWS WOULD NOT TASTE OR TOUCH.

"FRUIT OF THE VINE, the designation used by Jesus at the institution of the Lord's supper (Matt. XXVI. 29), is the expression employed by the Jews from time immemorial for the wine partaken of on sacred occasions as at the Passover and on the evening of the Sabbath.

"That this was done further appears, for example, in connection with the kettle of warm water and the servants to MIX the wine, which were employed at the passover, hence IN THE EARLY CHRISTIAN CHURCH IT WAS CUSTOMARY TO MIX THE SACRAMENTAL WINE WITH WATER.

"The name given by Paul to the commemorative ordinance instituted by our Lord on the evening preceding his crucifixion (1 Cor. xi.20). PAUL'S account is the earliest record of the institution of the Supper by at least two or three years. It was written probably early in A.D. 57, just twenty-seven years after the supper was instituted. THE APOSTLE HAD INTRODUCED IT FIVE YEARS EARLIER, WHEN HE ORGANIZED THE CORINTHIAN CHURCH and "DELIVERED UNTO THEM" the ordinance... BUT HE HAD RECEIVED FROM THE LORD WHAT HE HAD DELIVERED UNTO THEM. Wishing to fulfill all righteousness and to honor the ceremonial law whilst yet it continued, Jesus made arrangements to eat the passover with his disciples (Matt. xxvi.17 - 19).

"As the paschal lamb was KILLED IN THE EVENING, and its flesh eaten the SAME EVENING, the paschal feast necessarily took place in the EVENING (Matt. xxvi 20). WINE MIXED WITH WATER HAD COME INTO USE ON SUCH OCCASIONS BECAUSE THAT WAS REGARDED AS THE BEST WAY OF USING THE BEST WINE. When, therefore, our Lord was about to follow up the supper by the communion, THERE WAS WINE MIXED WITH WATER ON THE TABLE. So also was there unleavened bread. He and his disciples were sitting (Matt. xxvi.20), by which is meant that, after the custom of the time, they half sat, half reclined on couches (Mark xiv.18). Note: In the type, this sacramental service was celebrated in the "vineyard" of the Lord (the land of Israel). When the PASCHAL FEAST was finished, Jesus took bread and blessed it, at the same time rendering thanks for it, and, giving it to the disciples, said: "This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me." And the cup in like manner after supper, saying:

"This cup is the NEW COVENANT in my blood, even that which is POURED OUT FOR YOU" (Luke xxii.19 -20, "which is shed for many unto remission of sins" (Matt. xxvi. 28). The object for which the Lord's Supper was instituted was to KEEP HIM IN REMEMBRANCE (Luke xxii.19). It was to show forth the Lord's death till he come (Cor. xi.25, 26). The Feast was not confined to the apostles nor to the Jewish Christians, but was celebrated in the churches of the gentiles. 1 Cor. 10:15-21. It was understood to be the privilege of the church for ALL TIME. The table on which the BREAD WAS PLACED WAS known as the LORD'S TABLE (v:21) the cup of wine retained the old name which it bore at the Jewish Passover, "CUP OF BLESSING" (v:16) and was also called the cup of the Lord. (21; xi.27). The Jewish Ency. pp. 532-4; 818-819, 820, 458.

[Publisher's note:

Shortly after this study was published, I asked Lois why she had put in this part about fermented wine, as the church teachings are against the use of fermented wine for any purpose, and especially in the Lord's Supper. She then asked me, How did they preserve it fresh? At that time I had no answer for her. Shortly after she died, a little over a year later, the following study came to my attention which answers that question. Therefore, the following study is presented to clarify the matter. Following this, a few more comments will be made concerning some of the things said in the Jewish Encyclopedia which she quotes.

"THE QUESTION: The WINE that is to be used for the 'Lords Supper', fermented or unfermented, and if it was unfermented, how was it preserved 'sweet?'

"The laws of fermentation are fixed facts, operating always in the same way, and requiring always and everywhere the same conditions.

"1. There must be saccharine (sugar) matter and gluten (yeast)

"2. The temperature should not be below 50° nor above 70° or 75°.

"3. The juice must be of a certain consistency

. Thick syrup will not undergo vinous fermentation. An excess of sugar is unfavorable to this process; and, on the other hand, too little sugar, or, which is the same thing, too much water, will be deficient in the necessary quantity of saccharine matter to produce a liquor that will keep, and for want of more spirit and vinous fermentation will almost instantly be followed by the acetous.

"4. The quantity of gluten or ferment must also be well regulated. Too much or too little will impede and prevent fermentation. ...

"Nature never forms spirituous liquors; she rots the grape upon the branch, but it is art which converts the juice into (alcoholic) wine. ..." Bible Wines, William Patton, p. 15-17.

'Fermentation is nothing else than the putrefaction of a substance containing no nitrogen. Ferment, or yeast, is a substance in the state of putrefaction, the atoms of which are in continual motion. ..." ibid., p. 84.

"... all fermentation may be prevented by excluding the air, by boiling, by subsidence, and by the use of sulphur. ...

"The ancients possessed the secret of preserving wines throughout the whole year. If the were alcoholic, they would preserve themselves. The peculiarity was preserving them sweet. ...

"By this process the water was evaporated thus leaving so large a portion o sugar as to prevent fermentation. ...

"The grape juice boils at 212°; but alcohol evaporates at 170°, which is 42° below the boiling point. So then, if any possible portion of alcohol was in the juice, this process would expel it. ...

"Aristotle, born 384 B.C., says, 'The wine of Arcadia was so thick that it was necessary to scrape it from the skin bottles in which it was contained, and to dissolve the scrapings in water." ibid., p. 25-27.

"The art of distillation was then unknown; it was not discovered till the ninth century.

"By filtration, the gluten or yeast is separated from the juice of the grape. Whilst the juice will pass through the filtering implements, the gluten will not, and, being thus separated, the necessary conditions of fermentation are destroyed." ibid., p. 33.

"Chemical science teaches that the gluten may be so effectually separated from the juice by subsidence as to prevent fermentation. The gluten, being heavier than the juice, will settle to the bottom by its own weight if the mass can be kept from fermentation for a limited period. ...

"By lowering the temperature to 45°, if the fermenting mass becomes clear at this temperature and be drawn of from the subsided yeast, it will not ferment again, though it should be heated to the proper pitch." ibid., p. 36.

"Dr. Ure states that fermentation may be stopped by the application or admixture of substances containing sulphur; that the operation consists partly in absorbing oxygen, whereby the elimination of yeasty particles is prevented. Adams in his Roman Antiquities ... says 'that the Romans fumigated their wines with the fumes of sulphur; that they also mixed with the mustum, newly pressed juice, yolks of eggs, and other articles containing sulphur." ibid., p. 39.

"There is abundance of evidence that the ancients mixed their wines with water; not because they were so strong, with alcohol, as to require dilution, but because, being rich syrups, they needed water to prepare them for drinking. The quantity of water was regulated by the richness of the wine and the time of the year." ibid., p. 50.

"The first occasion, following the order of the Gospels, on which Christ speaks of wine, he says (Matt. ix.17): 'Neither do men put new wine into old bottles,' etc. A similar statement is also made by Mark ii. 22 and Luke v. 37.

"Our Lord here refers to a well-known custom, in his day, in relation to the keeping of wine. Notice the facts, They did not put (oinos neos) – new wine the juice fresh from the press – into old bottles, then made of the skins of goats, and the reason is given, 'Else the bottle break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish,' But it was the custom to put new wine into new bottles, and the reason is given 'That both the wine and the bottles are thus preserved'

"The explanation of the advocates of but one kind of wine give is that new bags were used in order to resist the expansive forces of the carbonic acid gas generated by fermentation. This explanation necessarily admits that the new wine had not yet fermented; for, if it had been fermented, the old bottles would suit just as well as the new; but the new, it is pleaded, were required to resist the force of fermentation. They thus concede that the new wine had not yet fermented.

"Chambers. in his Cyclopaedia, early edition, says: 'The force of fermenting wine is very great, being able, if closely stopped up, to burst through the strongest cask! What chance would a goat skin have?

"I have said, if the 'new wine' had already fermented, the old bottles would suit just as well as the new; but if not fermented, the old would not suit, not because they are weak, but because they would have portions of the albumous matter or yeast adhering to the sides. This, having absorbed oxygen from the air, would become active fermenting matter, and would communicate it to the entire mass.

"The new bottles, or skins, being perfectly clean and free from all ferment, were essential for preserving the fresh unfermented juice, not that their strength might resist the force of fermentation, but, being clean and free from fermenting matter, and closely tied and sealed, so as to exclude the air, the wine would be preserved in the same state in which it was when put into the skins." ibid., p. 78, 79.

One of foregoing quotations from the Jewish Encyclopedia which talks about mixing water with the wine, says, "That this was done further appears, for example, in connection with the kettle of warm water and the servants to MIX the wine, which were employed at the Passover, hence in the early Christian church it was customary to mix the sacramental wine with water."

As we have learned from the study, Bible Wine, water was mixed with the boiled down grape juice syrup in order to reconstitute it and make it drinkable. This was easier to accomplish with "warm water" than with cold. So, the true traditional purpose for adding of water to wine was not to weaken its influence (though this may also have been done by those who used fermented wine), but to make the unfermented, preserved grape juice (wine) drinkable. They could not drink the thick, boiled-down grape syrup.

One last note on this matter. It is written in Isaiah 1:22 "Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water." What this means is that their "wine" was not "new" (fresh), but was old and preserved, and needed water added to make it usable, and refers to the fact that their teachings (doctrines) were not fresh from the prophets, whom they had been killing.

"Three times a year the Jews were required to assemble at Jerusalem for religious purposes. Enshrouded in the pillar of cloud, Israel's invisible Leader had given the directions in regard to these gatherings.

"HE who had ORDAINED these national ASSEMBLIES and understood their significance, witnessed their perversion. The FEAST of TABERNACLES was the CLOSING gathering of the year. It was God's design that at this time the people should reflect on His GOODNESS AND MERCY. The feast continued for seven days, and for its celebration the inhabitants of Palestine, with many from other lands, left their homes, and came to Jerusalem.

"At the first dawn of day, the priests sounded a long, shrill blast upon their silver trumpets, and the answering trumpets, and the glad shouts of the people from their booths, echoing over hill and valley, welcomed the festal day. The priest dipped from the flowing waters of the Kedron a flagon of water, and, lifting it on high, while the trumpets were sounding, he ascended the broad steps of the temple, keeping time with the music with slow and measured tread, chanting meanwhile, "Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem." He bore the flagon to the ALTAR, which occupied a central position in the court of the priests. Here were TWO SILVER BASINS, with a PRIEST standing AT EACH ONE. The flagon of water was poured into one, and a flagon of wine into the other; and the contents of both (mixed) flowed into a pipe which communicated with the Kedron, and was conducted to the Dead Sea. This display of the consecrated water represented the fountain that at the command of God had gushed from the rock to quench the thirst of the children of Israel. Then the jubilant strains rang forth, "The Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song;" "therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

"In the midst of the feast, when the excitement concerning Him was at its height, He entered the court of the temple in the presence of the multitude. Standing thus, the center of attraction to that vast throng, Jesus addressed them as no man had ever done. Day after day He taught the people, until the last, "that great day of the feast." The morning of this day found the people wearied from the long season of festivity. SUDDENLY JESUS LIFTED UP HIS VOICE, IN TONES THAT RANG THROUGH THE COURTS OF THE TEMPLE: "If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." Jesus invited them to come and drink of the FOUNTAIN OF LIFE, of that which would be in them a well of water, springing up unto everlasting life.

"The cry of Christ to the thirsty soul is still going forth, and it appeals to us with even greater power than to those who heard it in the temple on that last day of the feast. The fountain is open for all. The weary and exhausted ones are offered the refreshing draught..." "Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely." "Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water, springing up into everlasting life" D.A. pp. 447-454.

"On each of the seven days of the feast, the priests performed the ceremony which COMMEMORATED the SMITING OF THE ROCK (Christ) in the wilderness..." John 19: 34. (a prophecy of His being smitten in the vineyard, Israel). "But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and forthwith came there out BLOOD and WATER." "This is he that came by WATER and BLOOD, even Jesus Christ; not by WATER ONLY, but by WATER and BLOOD. AND IT IS THE SPIRIT THAT BEARETH WITNESS, BECAUSE THE SPIRIT IS TRUTH."

The TWO priests officiating at the altar, one at the silver basin for the WINE and one at the basin for the WATER, prefigured the TWO streams of salvation administered by two High priests (intercessors, Rom. 8:26, 34) that after His death would flow forth to the countless multitudes that would believe on His name, His death, burial, and resurrection. Jesus said, "And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you ANOTHER COMFORTER, that he may abide with you forever;" ..."But the COMFORTER, which is the HOLY GHOST, whom the Father will SEND IN MY NAME, he shall teach you ALL things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." John 14: 16, 26.

"For this MELCHISEDEC, King of Salem, PRIEST of The Most High God." "Without father, without mother, without decent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made LIKE unto the son of God (not the son); abideth a PRIEST CONTINUALLY (eternally)." (Heb. 9:14). And it is yet far more evident; for that AFTER the similitude (likeness) of Melchisedec there ariseth ANOTHER PRIEST (not Melchisedec), who is made, NOT after the law of CARNAL commandment, but after the POWER of an ENDLESS LIFE." Heb. 7: 1, 3, 15, 16.

"For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens." (even Christ Jesus)." verse 26. From these verses one cannot escape the evidence of TWO High priests. Melchisedec of verse one and "ANOTHER priest (Christ)," of verse fifteen. Hebrews 9: 14 shows it was the Eternal Spirit, Melchisedec, who offered the blood of Jesus' sacrifice in the Sanctuary above when He died upon the cross of Calvary. Therefore: TWO High Priests in the Sanctuary – CHRIST and The HOLY SPIRIT; TWO administrations, the WATER and the BLOOD, cleansing by the Holy Spirit (water) and by Christ (blood of the Lamb); TWO comforters CHRIST and the HOLY SPIRIT; TWO streams of salvation – WATER and BLOODS because THEIR waterS they issued out of the sanctuary." Eze. 47: 12.

"...These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea (like the water and wine at the feast of Tabernacles) which being brought forth into the sea, the waters should be healed." And it shall come to pass, that everything that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the RIVERS shall come, shall LIVE; and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waterS shall come thither; for they shall be healed; and EVERYTHING shall LIVE whither the river(s) cometh." Eze. 47: 8, 9. Gods be praised! From verse 1 of Eze. 47 is seen the waters, PLURAL, at least TWO. Verse 12 brings to view a MALE Tree. The marginal reference in Rev. 22: 2 refers to Eze. 47:12. Rev. 22:2 brings to view a FEMALE Tree of LIFE. Eze. 47:12 ...It (tree) shall bring forth NEW fruit according to HIS months" – a MALE Tree of LIFE. Rev. 22:2 "In the midst of the street of it (The City) and on EITHER SIDE of the river, was there a tree of life (two), which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded up HER fruit every month.

"On either side of the river was there a tree of life." – TWO TREES (symbol of leaders) LIVING, Male and Female. TWO High Priests; TWO Comforters; TWO Streams, one of BLOOD and one of WATER; TWO Turtle-Doves, Male and Female, the FINAL CLEANSING from the leprosy of sin by the WATER and the WINE in THE LORD'S SUPPER. ALL THESE ARE SYMBOLIC OF TWO EARTHLY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE BRANCH HE AND THE BRANCH SHE, CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. (Jer. 23:5, 6; Jer. 33:15:16.)

"Jesus said unto them, Verily, Verily, I say unto you, EXCEPT YE EAT THE FLESH (BREAD) of the son of man, and DRINK HIS BLOOD (Wine), ye have NO LIFE IN YOU: and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood (at the appointed hours – the third and ninth) dwelleth in me, and I in him." John 6:53-56.

Rev. 12: 7 – "There came to pass, there arose, WAR IN HEAVEN...Michael and his angels... the dragon and his angels." It was fittingly ordered that, as the rebellion arose from unfaithful ANGELS and THEIR leader (Satan), so they should be encountered and overcome by faithful angels and their Archangel (Michael) in heaven. On earth they (Satan and his angels) are fittingly encountered, and shall be overcome, as represented by the beast and false prophet, by the son of "MAN (God's vicegerent on earth)" and HIS armies of HUMAN saints. The conflict on EARTH, as in Dan. 10 has its correspondent conflict in HEAVEN. Michael is peculiarly the prince, or presiding angel, of the Jewish Nation. The conflict in heaven, though judicially decided already against Satan from the time of Christ's resurrection and ascension, receives its ACTUAL COMPLETION in the execution of Judgment by the ANGELS who CAST OUT Satan from HEAVEN. As MICHAEL fought before with Satan about the mediator (Moses) of the old covenant (Jude 9), so NOW the MEDIATOR of the NEW COVENANT, BY offering His sinless body in sacrifice, ARMS MICHAEL with power to RENEW and FINISH the conflict by COMPLETE VICTORY...his (Satan's) standing ground in heaven against Israel, too, shall be taken from him, "The LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem," rebuking him, and casting him out from heaven ACTUALLY and FOREVER by Michael, the (heavenly) prince, or presiding angel of the Jews." PARALLEL to this analogy is JOSHUA, the Lord's (earthly) servant, "like," or with the SAME name as the Lord (JOSHUA, Hebrew = Jesus, Greek) being representative of his nation, Israel, and Satan standing at God's right hand as adversary to resist Israel's justification...shortly before the millennium (Satan) loses his power against Israel, and has sentence of expulsion FULLY EXECUTED on him AND his BY MICHAEL...BY the instrumentality of MICHAEL, Israel's ANGELIC prince. Jude 9. Michael, the Archangel – Nowhere in Scripture is the plural used, "Archangels," but only ONE "Archangel." The only other passage in the New Testament where it occurs, is 1 Thess. 4: 16, where CHRIST IS DISTINGUISHED FROM THE ARCHANGEL, with whose voice He shall descend to raise the dead; THEY THEREFORE ERR WHO CONFOUND CHRIST WITH MICHAEL. The names mean (one) who is "like" God (not "is" God). In Dan. 10:13 he is called "ONE" (margin, the FIRST) of the "CHIEF princes." He is the champion angel of Israel. "In Rev. 12:7 the conflict between Michael and Satan (two created beings) is alluded to. "DURST NOT" – from reverence for Satan's former dignity (v.8). "RAILING accusation" – (Greek) "judgment of blasphemy," or "evil speaking." Jude says, that the archangel Michael himself did not rail even at the time he fought with the devil, the prince of evil Spirits – not from fear of him, but from reverence of God, whose delegated power in this world Satan once had, and in some degree still has. Satan, as having the power of death, opposed the raising again (the body of Moses), on the ground of Moses' sin at Meribah, and his murder of the Egyptian.

"So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his sepulcher."

"But angels of God (Michael and Gabriel) buried the body of His faithful servant and watched over the lonely grave.

"But he was not long to remain in the tomb. Christ Himself, with the angels who had buried Moses, came down from heaven to call forth the sleeping saint. Satan had exulted at his success in causing Moses to sin against God, and thus come under the dominion of death. The great adversary declared that the divine sentence – "Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return" (Genesis 3:19) – gave him possession of the dead. The power of the grave had never been broken, and all who were in the tomb he claimed as his captives, never to be released from his dark prison house.

"For the FIRST time Christ was about to give life to the dead. As the Prince of life and the SHINING ONES approached the grave, Satan was alarmed for his supremacy. With his evil angels he stood to dispute an invasion of the territory that he claimed as his own. He boasted that the servant of God had become his prisoner.

Moses came forth from the tomb glorified, and ascended with his Deliverer to the city of God.

That Moses' body was raised, appears from his presence with Elijah and the transfiguration; the sample or EARNEST of the coming RESURRECTION kingdom, to be ushered in by Michael's standing up "for" God's people. It is noteworthy that the SAME REBUKE is recorded here, as was used by the Angel of the Lord, or by Jehovah the SECOND PERSON, in pleading for Joshua, the representative of the Jewish church. Thus in each dispensation a SAMPLE and pledge of the FUTURE RESURRECTION was given: Enoch in the Patriarchal dispensation; Moses in the LEVITICAL; Elijah in the PROPHETICAL.

"...The literal body (of Moses) is evidently here meant, as IT WAS THERE REPRESENTED by JOSHUA the HIGH PRIEST; and Michael, whose CONNECTION seems to be SO CLOSE with Jehovah – Messiah (having his same name "Michael" like Joshua, Jesus) on the-one hand, and with Israel on the other, naturally (he) uses the SAME LANGUAGE as HIS LORD." Critical and explanatory commentary of the Bible on Jude 9, Rev. 12. Therefore, Michael the archangel is NOT THE LORD, for he said, I will not speak evil against thee; but, "the LORD rebuke thee," (by resurrecting the body of Moses). YET, he carries the "SAME" name as the Lord, "Michael.

"I will commune with thee from BETWEEN the Cherubim (Two)." (Exodus 25:22). It has not been known that the TWO cherubim, with wings outstretched over the mercy seat covering the Ark of Ten Commandments were symbolic of two "living" beings, angels (Michael and Gabriel) created in the image of God (male and female).

"While any angel may be sent to execute the commands of God might be called the angel of the Lord (2 Sam. xxiv. 16; 1 Kin. xix. 5.7) yet mention is made of AN ANGEL, and under the circumstances one is justified in always thinking of the same angel, who is DISTINGUISHED FROM JEHOVAH, and YET, be identified WITH him who revealed the face of God (Gen. xxxii.30), IN WHOM was Jehovah's NAME (Ex. xxiii.21), and WHOSE PRESENCE was EQUIVALENT to JEHOVAH'S PRESENCE (Ex. xxii.34). The ANGEL of the LORD thus appears AS a manifestation of JEHOVAH HIMSELF, ONE WITH Jehovah AND YET DIFFERENT FROM HIM." Dict. of the Bible - John Davis, Ph.D.

KING JAMES – "Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee."

MODERN LANGUAGE – "Yet, the archangel Michael, when in his encounter with the devil he argued about the body of Moses, did not venture to pronounce a reviling judgment against him, but said, 'The Lord rebuke You.' "

LIVING BIBLE – "Yet Michael, ONE of the mightiest of the angels, when he was arguing with Satan about Moses' body, did not dare to accuse even Satan, or jeer at him, but simply said, 'The Lord rebuke you.' "

REVISED STANDARD – "But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, disputed about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a reviling judgment upon him, but said, 'THE LORD REBUKE YOU.' "

"And lo, the heavens were suddenly alight with glory that came not from the rising sun. The earth trembled. They saw that the great stone was rolled away. The grave was empty."

"The women had not all come to the tomb from the same direction. Mary Magdalene was the first to reach the place; and upon seeing that the stone was removed, she hurried away to tell the disciples. A light was shining about the tomb, but the body of Jesus was not there. As they lingered about the place, suddenly they saw that they were not alone." Matt. 28:1,5-8; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1.12; John 20:1-18; John 16:22 A young man clothed in shining garments was sitting by the tomb. It was the ANGEL WHO HAD ROLLED AWAY THE STONE. He had taken the guise of humanity that he might not alarm these friends of Jesus. Yet about him the light of the heavenly glory was still shining, and the women were afraid. They turned to flee, but the angel's words stayed their steps. 'Fear not ye,' he said; 'for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."

"ANOTHER ANGEL in human form is there, and he says, 'Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen; remember how He spake unto you when He was yet In Galilee, saying, The Son of man must be delivered into, the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.'"

"Looking in, she saw the TWO ANGELS, ONE at the HEAD and the OTHER at the FOOT where Jesus had lain."

"THESE ANGELS HAD BEEN WITH CHRIST AS GUARDIAN ANGELS THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE ON EARTH. They had witnessed His trial and crucifixion. They had heard His words to His disciples. This was shown by their message to the disciples, and should have convinced them of its truth. SUCH WORDS COULD HAVE COME ONLY FROM THE MESSENGERS OF THEIR RISEN LORD."

"Even when the women declared that they had seen the Lord, the disciples would not believe. They thought them under an illusion."

"And the hearts of the disciples were so full of grief that they did NOT BELIEVE THE ANGELS' MESSAGE or the WORDS of CHRIST HIMSELF. HOW MANY ARE STILL DOING WHAT THESE DISCIPLES DID?" D.A. pp. 788-794.
